Is it right time to buy Apple’s product from Bangladesh?

It has been about 11 months that I’ve purchased Macbook Pro 13.3 inches. Though I am extremely happy with hardware design, I am that level of unhappy due to instability of the Mac OS. I can’t run it for more than 3 days as it either hangs or become too unstable to use! Many applications including Firefox 4 crashing frequently on it.

Again, in the first month of purchase, a silica ball as been penetrated into its sound port (3.5mm) and to date it is safely there. Why? Because Aloha iShoppe, from where I’ve purchased it, said they can’t open it as it will void the Apple’s warranty though they are authorized dealer of Apple’s product! If I need to claim warranty, they would send the laptop to Singapore and it will take about 2 months to get back the laptop. Can you imagine?

Moreover from last week, power adapter for my macbook pro is dead. This morning I went to Executive Machines for asking the price of a macbook pro adapter. They said it is 8500 BDT. And they also said you can get yours one replaced from where you’ve purchased it as it has one year warranty (they also provide same warranty for their power adapters too)! Then I called to Aloha iShoppe and here is pattern of conversation:

Me: What is the warranty duration for power adapter of macbook pro?
Aloha: There is no warranty for the power adapter.
Me: But so far I know, it also has same warranty as the main body!
Aloha: When you’ve purchased it?
Me: Last june!
Aloha: Actually, it does not has so long warranty, it has about 90 days of warranty?
Me: But Executive Machines is giving 1 year warranty for power adapter.
Aloha: ummm, it is (1 year warranty) given for the products from this year, not for earlier products (power adapter)!
Me: What is the price of power adapter at your house?
Aloha: It is 9500 BDT.
Me: OMG! It is 8500 BDT at Executive Machines. Why you are charging higher prices with less warranty period?
Aloha: They might not have the product, they sometimes, tell prices for products even they don’t have.
Me: Well, they showed me the adapter

(I hang up the phone!)

If you read the above conversation, you will notice how inconsistent their information are!

With my bad experiences with Apple products, I don’t think we should buy Apple’s product unless there is a service center of Apple in Bangladesh! However, if you need to buy, I think it will be wise not to buy from Aloha iShoppe.

Few months ago, I purchased a remote control from Executive Machines by BDT 1700 whose price was asked 2800 at Aloha! So you see how much higher their prices and most importantly, poor after sales service.

What’s the condition of your adapter now ? If i were you, i would open the adapter and try to fix it with a soldering iron in hand, no need to bother with CC 😛

Hey! I’m going to bangladesh for 2 months and internet is a must with my macbook pro. But I’m also on a college student budget. I was wondering what the internet options are?

p.s. As far as the adapter prices go you would probably have better luck ordering things online. They sound cheaper as well.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Tonni.

    Hi,
The adapter’s (original Apple) price on ebay is around $50 which shows how much we pay extra to buy things in this country!

For your internet, you can go with any GSM/CDMA connections. All cellular companies now provide internet. However, if you stay in Dhaka or major cities you will get WiMAX, Cable connection.

However, take a preparation to enjoy(!) scorpion internet speed, at least, comparing to other countries.

    Dear HungryCoder

I stumbled upon your post just today. I am the General Manager of Executive Machines. The experience you had, though it is painful for you, justly shows the difference between a Premium Reseller and the rest. All Apple notebooks have 1-year complete warranty from the date of purchase, regardless of where you purchased it from. We, as Premium Resellers, always give you the correct answer. We are also the Authorized Service Provider in Bangladesh now. So any problems you might have with your notebook, regardless of where you purchased from, you can bring to us for warranty/service. If you need to contact us any further, please email us at info@emlbd.net or call us at 019-777-27753

    Dear Mr. Salman,
Thanks for your comment. Well, I’ve brought my laptop to your store (Executive Machines) and your staff also said me that I can’t get service from you as I did not purchase it from your store!

Then, I’ve brought it to Jel Trading’s iCentre. They gave us me the service though they wanted to skip it showing lame reasons. But when I’ve proved their reasons wrong, they taken it and sent to Singapore or somewhere else and managed to give me a new Power Adapter for free.

some lame one at executive machines desk at gulshan-2 (2.5 hour ago) who calls himself a certified technical person. they didn’t(even not a try) solved my 0.02$ problem with directory permission issue( unable to access in snow leopard due to lack of dir permission), it took just 10 minute to fix it with my mac os x installation dvd.
I rushed there as i dont have mac os x installation dvd that time, thought they might fix this quickly but they are talking some alien language with out getting into the point.
the guy (seems someone called him dada) talking so high level techy words like kernel panic, data back up etc.. which were totally irrelevant.
    i am also an experienced computer engineer(software engr.), i said is there any technical person so that i can discuss with, he said ‘i am the certified technical person’;

i explained and said well it was just simple problem with directory permission do you understanding my problem? i can solve it using a snow leopard dvd as i dont have it right now with me so i rushed there, thought they could help me 🙁

finally i went back to home and solved it with my own dvd.

now question is why you guys tell people which is not right?
and why you guys behave like alien when someone into a trouble?
sounds there are no customer service ethics in your land.

It’s very sad to hear your experience Mr. Tonu. I don’t people why people of our beloved country jump into service business without really caring about services and professional commitments!

I thought I will brought my iPad 2 to them as it’s home button is disturbing sometime (though i’m using 4 fingers pinching as alternative) but I’m now re-evaluating my thinking again.

    Thanks for your valuable comment!

  • The HungryCoder

    Hi Mr. Salman,
Can you kindly comment about the recent experience faced by Mr. Tonu in your business premise?

    Thanks in advance!

HungryCoder, man, this has been very helpful. And fyi, it would take much, much longer than 2 months to reclaim your laptop if its sent to singapore for repairs. my friend had to send his for a keyboard issue, it took around 6 months.
