During the first week of november, visiting WHT I have seen that Creative VPS has an incredible VPS deal (Halloween promotion)! That is really an attractive offer. I instantly signed up with them on Nov 5. I got the account details on Nov 8 :-O. Even I just received webmin access (i requested its installation during order). I did not get formal account account info mail. I got that after asking 3 times even 3-4 days later. Anyway, i could login to webmin and shell using that info and prepared the server and moved a forum there. I was very much happy seeing the performance. After 2/3 days later, at morning I have seen that mysql is stopped. I started it. Same happened for next day too. I again started it and install monit to monitor its activity. Surprise was waiting for next day morning. I see that my site is not coming. I failed to login in shell. Then logged in to VZCP and see the container is off :-O. I started it. After a few mins, I received a email telling that CPU abuse from my VPS and offering to purchase server management. This is first time I heard for any VPS. Seems that I am in a shared hosting. Being VPS I should have separate partition of everything. Moreover, the site the VPS service is not anything intense. It was running fine with more 90+ domains in a VPS with WiredTree. The vps load remains below 1 most of the time. Continue reading →
My last VPS review was almost negative which was about Wowvps. No worry! Now some smile! Its not a negative review. But I should have given this review first as I tested zipservers.com before buying from wowvps (second time).
I had a promo of zipservers for first month. So it was a great opportunity to test the server at low cost. I ordered a VPS without any delay. I got the account information. Started configuring the server and used the server about a month. I have hosted a site that have monthly 2million+ hits.
I was very happy with them as their server is excellent. Performance was fast, network speed was superb. Most probably support response time is not up to the mark. Also their mails’ format is not eye friendly.
Whatsoever, the main parts of the service were very satisfactory. You may find their server a bit expensive comparing others. But I think they deserve priority if we care about quality.
I added them up in my trust list and surely back to them in future when needed
So I had two experience with wowvps.com. After the both experience my single word decision is “just ignore them”.
First experience was a few months ago. I have purchased a VPS for one of my senior friends to learn WHM. They claimed that cPanel runs well on their all VPS. So after activation, getting this confirmation, I told them to order cPanel. They installed it taking a quite long time. But I could not do anything in cPanel. Even could not rebuild the apache. So, when I complain it and I told I will write about this bad experience in WHT, they offered me free RAM upgrade to 256MB. I know cPanel does need 256MB but I don’t know why they claimed such and they installed in 128MB! So from next month, I did not renew the service with them.
In an earlier post I have told that choosing a right host is getting complex day by day as there are enormous numbers of hosting companies worldwide. So, it is going to be harder day by day to choose a right host of expected quality at right budget. That’s why before purchasing any vps and dedicated server I do my own research. I have to do it as I have to regularly buy servers for my customers. As their budgets and requirement varies I have to do own research almost for all orders.
Today, for a specific need, I had to work with logwatch. After setting up logwatch, I needed to check the logwatch reports. But I can’t wait for it to mail me at next mailing time. But I can generate the report to see on screen by
But it was too big! So, I redirected the output to a file by running:
logwatch –print > logwatch.txt
But still I am not comfortable reading such a big file from shell. So I thought to mail it. I wondered how! If I am not wrong, mail command can’t send attachment. Even I did not found anything in manual of mail command. So, started googling. I came to know about Mutt. After using it I see it is awesome and very easy. Continue reading →
Hosting a website is getting complex day by day. Isn’t it? Wonder why I am saying it is complex while there are thousands (may be millions) of companies providing web hosting at various price, quality, packages? Answer is the number. There are too many companies in web hosting. So it is always becomes very tough to find a right hosting company to host your site and/or application. If you don’t have your own list of good hosts, you will surely be in problem while choosing a company.
But in internet there are also some websites to facilitate your research for choosing a hosting company. One of them is 4 Cheap Web Hosting. It’s a hosting classified website. In this site, you can search hosting companies within your budget. You can choose your monthly budget, space required and platform. In advance search (power search here) you can set extensive criterions. Then it will show a list matching packages against your given criterions. You can compare the packages and companies from the list.
Long ago I have written a review about zone.net My today’s review is almost reverse of previous one. Click here to see my first review about Zone.net.
My that review should go his museum now. Last month I again have bought a VPS from zone.net. Their service and support was just rubbish. As I claimed in first review that their network speed is not good, it is worse now. I could not get it solved by even several mails. Moreover revealed their stupid customer service.
In previous review, I also told about their slow customer support. Most probably their averag response time is now reduced with some stupid answers like ‘our admin will check the issue and let you know’.
When I complained this issue in WHT, another user confirmed the same problems.
So I through out Zone.net from my favorites list. If you are thinking of buying from them, think more before you smile seeing good reviews about them. Check the timestamps of those reviews.
Recently I am trying to learn managing nginx web server. Most probably it is going to take the place of Apache or at least seat beside Apache. The main benefit Nginx is claimed to be low memory footprint.
So far I have configured three VPS with nginx (also mysql & php). But every time I felt uneasy to start and stop the service as it can’t be started or stopped as ordinary service call.
To start apache/httpd we write:
service httpd start
But to start Nginx we have to write:
[I assume that Nginx is installed in default directory]
Again to stop apache, we write:
service httpd stop
But in case of Nginx:
kill -9 `cat /usr/local/nginx/logs/nginx.pid`
killall -9 nginx
Today I thought to make it a bit easier. So after mining the internet, I have made a small script to take care of start, stop, restart and check the status of Nginx. I am new to shell scripting.
How to implement it?
- I expect your Nginx installation is completed successfully and you can start/stop the server using the earlier methods.
- Download this file
- Store the file in /sbin/ as nginx. So that path of this file will be /sbin/nginx
- Chmod it to 744 by calling:
chmod 744 /sbin/nginx
- You are done.
Now to start the server:
Stopping the server:
Restarting the server:
Hope you like it :).
So, any suggestion is
Today one of my junior friend asked me to help with his new VPS. He was in trouble that his mysql server was not starting up. After logging in the server, I saw the problem. It was showing:
Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon.
Starting MySQL: [FAILED]
I tried many ways. But none worked. Later, thought, I can rebuild the VPS as it is new VPS.
Today I have purchased another new VPS to play with nginx web server. After getting the login info, I tried to compile the nginx source. But I found that no development libraries were installed. So I started to install one by one:
yum install gcc
yum install glibc
yum install make
and so on. [Note: these can be run as yum install gcc glibc make this way]
anyway, each time I run the configure script, I find something is missing. Later, groupinstall splashed in my mind. Though I know about its functionalities, I have never used it before. But I failed trying like:
yum groupinstall development
yum groupinstall development-tools
Later I found the trick to know the groups name.
yum grouplist will show all available groups name. After hit the return key you will get a list like the following:
Compatibility Arch Support
GNOME Desktop Environment
GNOME Software Development
Games and Entertainment
You should see them in two categories. “Installed” and “Available”. You know what they mean.
Now we know the all available groups name. So its time to execute. I needed the development libraries. So I run
yum groupinstall “Development Tools”
You should type the name as shown in the list including the quotation marks. It will install everything on that group.
Be careful before using it. It may install many unnecessary things. Use it where it is really necessary.
